ConsumerisMania!

Yes, I was one of the idiots who stayed up all night for the sales the day after Christmas. I didn't even want anything, I was just going with someone who wanted to pick up some cheap DVD box sets. Although we were dumb enough to go, we were lazy enough to get their late, so the line at Circuit City was like a 1/4 mile! We ended up going over to Best Buy and waiting in the car until the let most everyone in, bear in mind this is in Chicago and its like 20 degrees out...forget waiting outside. I didn't even really buy anything...it was pointless.
I topped off the insanity with a trip with a group of friends to the Magnificent Mile, aka Michigan ave, in downtown Chicago. Surprisingly, it was busy, but I had an awesome time, I didn't buy anything there either.
What makes an item not worth getting off the couch to buy one day, and worth waiting in below freezing temperatures for 3 hours the next: the sales? Honestly, that is retarded. I have my own theory.
Americans literally work to be able to entertain themselves. We work more than we ever have to in order to spend more than we ever need to. So why do we want the "sales"? I personally think it's our inner drive of competition and selfishness. There's always sales going on, but now everyone knows about them, and everyone is going to them, so you have to be the first, beat everyone there, buy more than you normally would so you can flaunt your winnings to your peers. No wonder marketing is a billion dollar industry. We are consumers...Hey! Back off my digital picture frame!
Sorry if I offended your shopping traditions.
